Sula full book5/30/2023 But this is softened because the story is told with such beautiful prose. I found the subject matter and the story to be hard reading. She is at best, unconventional and at worst, provocative. Sula leaves the Bottom and goes off to college, only returning after experiencing many cities across the country. She raises a family and takes the conventional road, in keeping with the way her mother did before her. Then, one day, a dreadful accident happens and things change. They share experiences, feelings and grow up together as an outlet away from their respective homes. Sula and Nel become friends at around 12 years old. It shows what that sort of struggle can do to a young woman’s personality. It shows pain, not so much overcome as accepted alongside happiness. It is a brutal story of poverty, the strength of black women and just how far they will go for themselves and their families. We are also shown briefly into Nel’s family as a counterpoint. We are introduced to three generations of the Peace family, grandmother Eva, mother Hannah and Sula, herself. The setting is the Bottom, a hillside settlement of blacks above the white valley town of Medallion. We follow them from their girlhood through their family’s experiences and through to death. Sula is the first book by Toni Morrison that I have read and I’m certain it won’t be the last.Ĭovering the period following the First World War up until the mid 1960s, we are introduced to Sula Peace and her best friend Nel Wright.

Many exciting subplots ensue along the way, including a detour through the airport and a car on fire. The busy pages are crammed full of labelled illustrations of every mode of transport you could imagine (and loads of new vocabulary to learn, even for young vehicle experts!) These are accompanied by two main stories: one of a (pig) family on a journey to a picnic, and another of a (cat) police officer chasing a terrible (dog) driver. Who I can’t thank enough for his refreshing take on the genre.Ĭombining information, mockumentary, eye spy and story in equal measure, Cars and Trucks and Things that Go is the solution to boring-vehicle-book fatigue. Reading labelled engine parts does get a little dry after a while. But after the tenth or eleventh such book on its twentieth or thirtieth reading, I am done. I try to jazz up these reads with ad-libbed extra factoids and fun traffic noises. Which is great, because that’s what he’s into. With that comes a propensity towards a certain type of book: non-fiction, diagrammatical, straightforward, terminology-based. Like many other children, my son is OBSESSED with vehicles.

The Princess of Celle by Jean Plaidy5/30/2023 The licentious youth becomes a great king, and Oldcastle, the rake, turns into a religious reformer. When the king dies, Harry became King Henry the Fifth, and the change is dramatic for both him and Oldcastle. Dominating the court and with his eye on the crown is Harry of Monmouth, whose reckless conduct in low-class taverns with his crony Sir John Oldcastle causes scandal. He is beset by enemies, hampered by disease, and concerned about the rebellious behaviour of his son. But Henry finds the crown harder to hold onto than it was to win. Richard is deposed and dies mysteriously, murdered some say on the orders of Bolingbroke, now King Henry the Fourth. Richard the Second is losing his hold on the crown and Henry of Bolingbroke, previously exiled by the king, returns to England to claim it. Continuing Jean Plaidy's popular Plantagenet series, here is the dramatic story of King Henry the Fifth's rise from wayward youngster to warrior king.

Anthem novella book buy5/30/2023 So, How Much Does it Cost to Publish a Book? Look at Other Book Prices You will need to think strategically about setting your price in your book metadata, but pricing is less overwhelming when you consider these few basics. Is it to make as much money as possible? Sell as many copies as possible? Reach as many readers as possible? While many may assume these are the same goal, that’s not always the case, and how you price your book can impact all of these goals separately. Before you can do that, you should consider your publishing goal. An essential aspect of your book publishing plan will be to determine how to price your book.

The Bride Wore Black by Cornell Woolrich5/29/2023 The avenging angel of The Black Angel must race against time to prove that her convicted husband did not murder his mistress. Black Alibi, expanded from an earlier short story entitled “The Street of Jungle Death,” pits a rising singer against the dangers of an escaped jungle cat in the South American city of Ciudad Real, a beast who may or may not be responsible for the brutal deaths that keep occurring around the city. In Volume I of the Black Series, three distinct female protagonists brave the dark worlds of Black Alibi, The Black Angel and The Bride Wore Black. Fear of the dark, fear of unseen forces, and fear of forces outside one’s control dominate these nail-biting suspense thrillers for which the author is so well known. As such, Woolrich carefully crafted each of these novels to instill a deep and overwhelming sense of dread in both his characters and in the reader. At a time when the world was embroiled in war, crime fiction like Woolrich’s provided an escape from the horrors of the real world into horrors of a more artistic kind. The six novels of Cornell Woolrich’s famous Black Series-The Bride Wore Black (1940), The Black Curtain (1941), Black Alibi (1942), The Black Angel (1943), The Black Path of Fear (1944) and Rendezvous in Black (1948)-are the pinnacle of the era’s noir crime fiction writing.
